The most important part of a choosing the right location is all about lighting. I am always looking at the lighting to see what would make the most flattering light for your photos, the backdrop is just a bonus. But different setting can give your photos a different feel. Some people prefer fields and trees, some prefer an urban look, and some prefer buildings and architecture.
Below are some of my favorite photo session locations around Fredericksburg, Spotsylvania, and Richmond, with notes to help you decide what fits your vision best — whether you're planning family photos, senior portraits, or a session with your significant other.
Widow Tapp Field
Wide Tapp Field is a large open space that changes beautifully with the seasons. Sometimes the grass is tall and natural, other times it’s neatly cut, giving each session a slightly different look. Because of its openness, it offers lots of flexibility and a clean, timeless backdrop for family photos. It's a great place that allows the kids to run around.
Great for families or couples
Fawn Lake Beach (Spotsylvania)
This small beach area along the lake is perfect if you want a relaxed, natural feel. It’s especially lovely for spring and summer sessions.
Can be busy on weekends during the summer and spring. **This location is in a gated neighborhood, but I have access (live in) this neighborhood :)
Great for families, couples, or seniors
Fawn Lake Field
One of the most versatile locations in the area, Fawn Lake Field & Marina offers a large open field that works year-round. It's a big field with some pretty overgrowth and beautiful tree. There’s also a rocky area near the lake if you want subtle water views mixed into your session, making it easy to capture a variety of looks in one location.
This is also one of my favorite spots because it’s usually very quiet — I rarely run into other people here, which makes sessions feel relaxed and private.

Old Barn at Spotsylvania County Museum
The Old Barn at the Spotsylvania County Museum is a rustic favorite with weathered wood, tall overgrowth, and a quiet, tucked-away feel. Reaching the barn requires about a half-mile walk, so it’s something to keep in mind when planning your session—but the scenery is well worth it.
Great for families, couples, or seniors
Downtown Fredericksburg
Downtown Fredericksburg offers a charming city vibe with brick buildings, the train station, and a fun parking garage. It’s a great option if you want something more urban.
Great for seniors or couples
Spotsylvania Courthouse Battlefield
This location features wide open fields, walking trails, and expansive scenery that gives kids room to move and families space to relax. It’s especially beautiful in the fall, but works well throughout the year thanks to its natural landscape and open light.
Great for families, couples, or seniors
Chatham Manor (Fredericksburg)
Chatham Manor is a well-known local favorite with stunning views, a historic home, and formal gardens. Because of its popularity, it can be extremely busy on weekends and during peak seasons. I typically recommend planning sessions here during less crowded times of the year to fully enjoy the space and experience.
Great for seniors. In the off season, it's great for families or couples
RICHMOND PHOTO LOCATIONS
Maymont
Maymont is known for its beautifully maintained gardens and lush greenery. It’s a great option for families who love floral backdrops, stone pathways, and a more refined garden setting for their photos.
Great for families, couples, or seniors
Crump Park
Crump Park offers large open spaces, long fences, and mature trees that create a natural, understated backdrop. It’s ideal for families who want a simple setting that still feels scenic and relaxed.

Choosing the Right Photo Session Location
When planning your session, consider the season, how much walking you’re comfortable with, and whether you prefer natural landscapes, rustic elements, or a more urban setting. If you’re unsure which location fits your family best, I’m always happy to help guide the decision. I am also always willing to check out new locations if you have something specific in mind. I can usually check it out on Google maps and tell you whether it would be a good option or not. Some families live on farms and those always make beautiful backdrops
